Made for riders who risk a lot to win

For the development of the Dissident 2, Specialized worked with top athletes Loïc Bruni and Finn Iles to ensure that the next generation of the Gravity full-face helmet meets the highest demands of downhill racing in terms of safety, state-of-the-art fit and ventilation.

Due to the five EPS foam inserts placed at the most important points, Specialized is able to increase or decrease the density of the foam depending on the position in the helmet, thus being able to maintain a low weight while controlling energy. For example, softer foam density can absorb more energy in an impact, resulting in less energy being transferred to the rider. A lot of confidence can also be placed in the Dissident 2 because of the Mips Evolve Solution - this low-friction layer is designed to move slightly inside the helmet to direct forces away from the head. With this version of MIPS® technology, Specialized has placed fabric pockets inside the helmet that reduce creaking.

Keeping a cool head is more than a state of mind, and when things heat up it's easy to lose your composure - especially when your head feels like you're in a sauna. To prevent this, Specialized didn't focus on more ventilation openings, but on better ones. The ventilation system of the Dissident 2 was developed according to the inside-out principle and features a large air intake behind the visor that directs a cool airflow inwards, as well as strategically placed ventilation openings that allow warm air to flow out - this keeps your head cool in every situation and your thoughts focused.

Specialized was very important to us to construct a lightweight helmet. Because while racing on the track, the feeling of lightness and agility leads to faster reactions and less fatigue. Thanks to the EPS foam inserts, the helmet remains very light while still offering great protection. Specialized can only speculate as to what was going through Finn Ile's mind during the run at Mont-Sainte-Anne that earned him his first World Cup win. But you know what he definitely wasn't thinking of... Whether it's downhill or enduro racing or any other gravity event, the Dissident 2 is made for riders who risk big to win.

Technologies used

In this chapter we explain the technologies that the manufacturer uses in this product.

MIPS
The MIPS® safety system was developed to provide additional protection for helmets in numerous accidents. In certain impact situations, the MIPS system can reduce dangerous forces that might otherwise be transmitted to the helmet wearer's head.

1. Conventional helmets are designed and tested for a straight impact. In most cases, however, the impact is at an angle, which can cause rotational movements for the head.

2. This rotational movement can cause brain injury.

3. The low-friction shell is designed to help reduce rotational movement of the head in certain cases of angled impact.

Straight impact - oblique impact

The brain is typically more sensitive to rotational movement than linear movement because it has a shear strength similar to that of water or gel. When rotational movement causes different parts of the brain to move at different times, the tissues can be stretched, causing concussions or other brain injuries.

Rotational motion is a common cause of concussion and more serious brain injury from an oblique impact to the head. The MIPS system consists of a low-friction shell that is fixed inside the helmet. The low-friction shell is designed to slide slightly inside the helmet in the event of an accident, allowing forces to be directed away from the head. It is said to help reduce the risk of brain injuries.

Most conventional helmets are designed for a straight impact, but in most cases the impact is at an angle. The low-friction shell can reduce the rotational forces of an oblique impact.

Security system with the brain as a model

Unlike conventional helmets, which are primarily designed and tested for a straight impact, the low-friction shell of the MIPS system mimics the brain's own protection system against rotational movement. The cerebrospinal fluid is our natural defense system that allows the brain to move offset to the skull.
